Step 3

In Roman times, the city was located in the valley but to escape the attacks of their enemies and the floods of the Var, the inhabitants left the plain to found Entrevaux in the 11th century.
To thank the inhabitants, who have defended the city on numerous occasions, François I dedicates Entrevaux “royal city” to the Renaissance.
Over the wars, the site was gradually fortified and in the 15th and 17th centuries, the Entrevalais successively repulsed the Savoy troops and the Piedmontese armies.
Louis XIV then entrusted Vauban with the task of consolidating the city's defenses with the help of fortresses: between 1679 and 1835 it was the golden age of Entrevaux which became a stronghold of the kingdom.
