access_time 3h

From Cisterna to Pocapaglia, the succession of villages perched on the ridge of the hills form a remarkable territory, characterized by a unique flora and by the coexistence of dry and extremely humid microclimates.

Take the “Castagna Granda” path and admire in particular a gigantic chestnut tree 400 years old with a circumference greater than 10 meters.

You can also take another route of 1h30 on the theme of geology. To find out more, discover the thematic sheet "The fossil trail".

The fossil trail
The fossil trail allows you to observe carefully the sandy layers on the slopes of the hills.

Composed of thin fossil layers of leaf and tree bark remains, shell fragments from various species of molluscs, and sometimes small bone fragments from marine mammals, these fossils date back to the Pliocene period (there 5 to 1,8 million years ago), when the sea covered these regions.
