The Ice Age
The caves, including that of La Baume bonne, enabled prehistoric people to survive the climate of the Quaternary era, known as the “ice age”.

This period is characterized by an alternation of periods of glaciation and milder periods.

The colder periods of the Quaternary saw mammoths, rhinos, bison and oxen grow in mass and wear hairy hairs.

About 10 years ago, the climate began to warm up and most of these animals were extinct. There are only a handful left today, smaller than their ancestors, the African elephants, rhinos and hippos.
