Day 2: Meet the many Ubayes
alt_route Stage 1 / Option 3 - Col de Vars by bike
Seven high mountain passes look out over the Ubaye. They are said to be mythical and for good reason: the Tour de France has crisscrossed them several dozen times. This valley, between the Dauphiné Alps and the Alpes-Maritimes, has a complex and varied geology. The rocks put in place in the Tertiary era by the tectonics of water tables are of great diversity.
In the Quaternary, the glaciers and in particular those of the Würm left their mark there, by sculpting the valley bottoms, sometimes in stages and producing a kind of mid-slope plateau. You will also see curious geological formations such as the “Demoiselles Coiffées”, between Saint-Paul and Mélezen.
After the ice had melted, these suspended valley bottoms filled with sediment enabled the first inhabitants to settle.
