Day 3: Around Allos
alt_route Stage 1 / Option 1 - Hike and picnic at Lac d'Allos
Perched at an altitude of 2 m, Lake Allos with an area of 228 hectares is the largest natural lake in Europe. Its great depth, up to 54 m, explains the turquoise blue color of its waters in which brown trout and arctic char live.
Born from the action of the retreat of a glacier about 10 years ago, it is fed by many sources and by melting snow.
In summer, a refuge installed at the edge of its water seduced the famous explorer Alexandra David-Néel: the peaks undoubtedly reminded her of the mountains of Tibet!
