alt_route Carboniferous forest in Verdache
This site classified as a National Nature Reserve is the oldest land visible on UNESCO Geopark of Haute Provence: it dates from the Carboniferous period, at the end of the primary era (between - 360 and - 280 million years).
At the time, the forest was tropical. The marshy environment is then populated by flying insects (including dragonflies of 70 cm wingspan!) Or close cousins of cockroaches and fish. The plant debris, buried in the sediments, gradually turned into charcoal which will be exploited much later.
