This site classified as a National Nature Reserve is the oldest land visible on UNESCO Geopark of Haute Provence: it dates from the Carboniferous period, at the end of the primary era (between - 360 and - 280 million years).

At the time, the forest was tropical. The marshy environment is then populated by flying insects (including dragonflies of 70 cm wingspan!) Or close cousins ​​of cockroaches and fish. The plant debris, buried in the sediments, gradually turned into charcoal which will be exploited much later.
