Day 3: Gardetta plateau, Italian geological heritage
alt_route Stage 1 / Gardetta plateau
The Gardetta plateau has been recognized as an Italian geological heritage because of the succession of strata which bear witness to the fracture of Pangea.
There are volcanic rocks, ancient rivers, beaches, coastal lagoons and remains of coral reefs with fossils of marine organisms.
In 2008, footprints of an archosaur, a Triassic reptile ancestor of dinosaurs, were discovered.
