access_time 3h - Free

Today the border between two departments (the Alpes-Maritimes and the Alpes de Haute-Provence), the collar of Petite Cayolle is in the past a real border between the kingdom of Savoie-Sardinia and that of France.

The signing of the Peace of Utrecht (1713) made Ubaye and the community of Allos French territories. The border shifts to the right and the forts at Colmars lose their geographic importance. Louis XIV, following the advice of geographers, established the new border on the watershed line.

Enjoy this haven of peace and observe, maybe you will see Apollo butterflies!

Rocky environments and their apolloons
Inhabiting mountain ranges up to 2 m, this butterfly is named after the Greek god of light and the arts, Apollo. It has existed since the Tertiary area and survived the last ice age!

From mid-May to mid-August, the Apollo (Parnassius apollo) flies over rocky lawns, scree, sunny cliffs (around 1 to 000 m). The main host plant of Apollo is White Stonecrop Sedum album.

From the end of June to the end of August, the Little Apollo (Parnassius corybas) is at the edge of torrents and in wet meadows (between 1 and 800 m) Its host plant is then the False Aizoon Saxifrage Saxifraga aizoides.

From the beginning of May to August, between 700 to 2 m, the Semi-Apollo (Parnassius mnemosyne) frequents sunny edges and clearings, the edges of beech and alder groves, cattle resting places and the surroundings of alpine chalets.
