alt_route Stage 3 / Bossea cave

access_time 3h - €

The first explorations of Bossea cave, opened to the public in 1874, date back to the first half of the 19th century. In 1948 and 1949, the exploration of the large fossil galleries above the Mora River and Loser Lake completed the topographical survey of the entire cavity which would then be refined over the following decades.

Bones are found in Bossea cave. It is Ursus spelaeus, cave bear, which lives during the Quaternary and whose remains date from - 80 to - 000 years. These bears probably come into the cave to hibernate or give birth. A reconstruction of the skeleton is on display to the public in the “Sala dell'Orso”.
