Day 5: On the ridges of Lure
alt_route Stage 1 / Option 1 - Citadel of Forcalquier
The mass of safre, soft and porous rock which constitutes the hill of the Citadel, plunges into a very humid basin from which several springs gush. A real sponge, it forms a small source which was enough, in the 9 or 10th century, to dig a large cistern and give the town its name: Fontcalquier means in Occitan the source (font) and limestone (calquier).
Formerly, we said to see near the source of Forcalquier, that we called Canèla or Candèla, a ghost. Children were threatened with it, saying: "Pichòts, anetz pas a la Ciutadèla, that Madame de Candèla vos agantarà e vos metrà dins lo trauc." (Little ones, don't go to the Citadel, otherwise Madame de Candelle will catch you and put you in the hole!).
